There follows 2 sets of 6 illustrations to show how TECHNOpor® is typically being used in new build projects, both in the UK and on the Continent.

Here in the UK, we tend to use TECHNOpor® as a replacement to concrete within the perimeter wall; TECHNOpor® is a certified insulating and load-bearing material and, hence, is used to form the floor slab which then only requires a screed finish.

In contrast, on the Continent, TECHNOpor® tends to be used as an insulating sub structure to a concrete slab, which will then act as thermal mass when combined with underfloor heating; the advantage of this system is that the wall-floor junction is fully insulated against any cold-bridging.

Installation Illustrations (typical in the UK)

Use of TECHNOpor®, as the floor slab, within the perimeter wall

1. EXCAVATION  Rough levelling with excavator shovel edge, or similar.

 

2. GEOTEXTILE  Lay non-woven geotextile (120-150g/m2) directly onto exposed, level ground.

 

 

3. TECHNOpor® DELIVERY  TECHNOpor® glass foam granulate can be delivered in bulk (a lorry load contains 90m3), or in 1.5m3 (or 3m3)bags.  The 1.5m3 bags are held in stock in the UK.

 

 

4. AGGREGATE DISTRIBUTION  Use a laser measurer to mark the walls with the height of both the uncompacted and compacted TECHNOpor® (compaction ratio 1.3 : 1), and then rake out the aggregate to the uncompacted level.

5. COMPACTION  Compact the TECHNOpor® using 2 passes (max 3 passes) of a vibrating plate compactor (90-120kg) to the pre-marked compacted level.  As it consolidates, it ‘locks’ to form a hard, flat* surface, though the top granules are still effectively loose [*flat – there will be +/- 2-3mm variance in the height of the granules].

 

 

6. COMPLETION  Wrap the geotextile over the surface of the TECHNOpor® (lay another sheet if the aggregate is not completely covered), and the floor slab is then ready for UFH pipes and / or screed.

Use of TECHNOpor® as insulating sub-structure to a concrete slab

3. TECHNOpor® DELIVERY  TECHNOpor® glass foam granulate can be delivered in bulk (a lorry load contains 90m3), or in 1.5m3 (or 3m3) bags.

 

 

 

4. AGGREGATE DISTRIBUTION  Rake out the aggregate to the pre-marked level.

 

 

 

5. COMPACTION  Use vibrating plate compactor (90-120kg) to compact the TECHNOpor® to the pre-marked compacted level (compaction ratio 1.3 : 1).

 

 

 

6. COMPLETION  Envelop the TECHNOpor® in the geotextile; it is now ready for the concrete slab.
